On Feb. 27 and 28, youth from 8th - 12th grade will fast, raise funds and perform community service as part of Worldvision's 30-Hour Famine. On Saturday the 28th we will visit Jesus People USA in Chicago to work in their clothing ministry and learn about ministries of mercy in an urban setting. We hope to raise enough money to save the lives of 20-30 children in developing nations, which will be multipled 5x by matching grants, to keep over 100 kids alive for another year.
If you're interested in participating (youth or adult volunteer leader), please contact me at wordoflife2020@sbcglobal.net.

caring for adults is hard
Would you like to get together with others who care for parents, spouses and other adults? Need some resources to be a better caregiver or just to survive the experience? On Saturday (Feb. 7) there's a half-day retreat at the United Methodist Church from 8:30 - 1:00. Ping us here or at wordoflife2020@sbcglobal.net for more info.

funeral
We had a memorial service for Rich Saturday. Does everybody come to a funeral and take stock of their own life?
Rich was four days older than me. Sunday I was older than he ever got to be. I'm going to die, too. You?
Maybe 500 people showed up. Most of them were in line for an hour before the service to greet the family, stayed almost 2 hours for the service, and more greeting and refreshments after. Do I have that many friends? Do you?
People got up and talked about his life. They laughed, they cried, but you knew that he had touched their lives deeply. Chance encounters became lifetime friends. How could I have that much impact in my life? How could you?
If you've got the answers, write a book. I'll buy it. If you even know a little bit, I'll buy a cup of coffee and be glad for the conversation. Rich has some time off now, but I'm still working. See you soon.

What the communities need
It is amazing to meet with so many civic leaders whose first motivations are to create unity in diverse community and to meet the needs of hungry children. Why? Because these aren't the topics of much social conversation. Our leaders are trying to lead us to a more just society and we need to help them.
Who will help feed hungry 3rd - 5th graders who are coming to school without breakfast? Where can we collect used shoes to give to folks who have no shoes? Who will help raise money to fight hunger and preventable disease?
It is gratifying to be welcomed into so many offices of power and find so many servants for whom these are key issues. Thank you.
17 new friends are part of the journey this year. Please pray for the work.

Happy New Year!
Time for resolutions. What's yours?
I'm going to be playing indoor soccer in a league. Got to be fit enough to run with younger guys. All those truisms about no pain, no gain and commitment come back to haunt.
We're planning to fast for more than a day Feb. 27-28 and raise money to fight hunger and preventable disease worldwide. That's a different kind of pain for a much more important gain. Care to join us? We expect 50-60 youth and a dozen or more adults, and hope to save a life for each of us. For more info see http://www.30hourfamine.org/
We've just reached 12 friends to go along on the ministry journey. Just like Jesus, but a long way from 500. Say a prayer.

Here we go!
Thanks for dropping by. In 2009, we're moving into the communities of Mundelein, Grayslake, Gurnee and Waukegan to share and give life wherever we can. We hope the Word of Life community will come together to share life on a larger scale. Posts will be a journal of our activities, invitation to our gatherings and events, and celebration of friendships made and blessings received. Stop by often!
